Biography

Magnus Jonsson, also known as Magnus V, was born about 1291, most likely at Kirkwall, Orkney. Magnus Jonsson was born to John (Magnusson) Magnusson of Orkney and of Caithness (abt.1259-1311) and an unknown wife.[1] He was a minor at the time of his father's death in 1303[2] and during his minority, he was a ward of Weland de Stiklaw[2] He came of age in 1312.[2]

Magnus first appears in charter records on 28 Oct 1312, as witness to a treaty between King Robert Bruce and King Hakkon V of Norway.[3][4][5] He was one of the men who signed the Declaration of Arbroath on 6 Apr 1320.[3][1]

He married Katherina (aka Caterina), sometime shortly before his death.[3] Under her own name, she granted a charter in which she identified her late husband as the heir of Earl John.[3][1] They had no known children.[3][1]

Magnus Jonsson died between 1322 and 1329, without an heir.[3] most likely in Orkney or Caithness.[2][1] He was succeeded by Malise, Earl of Strathearn.[1]

Magnus-99 and Gilchrist-271 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same death date, same location, same time frame, The Jarl's of Orkney are descendants of the Earls of Angus.
