Asa moved with his parents in 1795 to Bear Gap, Northumberland Co., Pa. He m. Mary "Polly" Thomas 2 Jan., 1811. Mary, d/o Joseph and Ann (Currey) Thomas was b. 12 Aug., 1788 near Bear Gap. She d. at 7 P.M. on 13 July, 1857.
Asa was raised on his parent's farm and received an education such as was available there at that time. He was a farmer, but also a tanner, having started a small tannery on his farm about 1825. The sole leather from his tannery was noted for its enduring qualities and was in great demand among the pioneers of that vicinity. He was one of the original members of the Society of Friends established in Ralpho Twp.(now Shamokin Twp.). It was originally called Shamokin Meeting and the meetings were held in his home as well as the homes of some of his siblings. They had formerly belonged to the Roaring Creek M.M.. In Jan., 1844 Asa granted to Hiram, Elida, and Perry John, Trustees, for $5.00, an acre of land for the sole use and benefit of the Religious Society of People, called Quakers, residing in the township. On this ground was built a Meeting House, a school, and a burial ground was laid out.
Asa and Polly had 7 issue: Abia(120), Enoch, Townsend, Joseph, Jesse (121), Ann (122), and Amos.
After Polly died Asa moved into the old brick house near Paxinos and his son Joseph -remained on the farm.
