Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary Johnson was a Virginia colonist.

Mary Johnson was born about 1674 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.[citation needed] She is thought to be the daughter of Robert Johnson and Katherine Allen of Isle of Wight as evidenced by the following deed of gift:[1]

4 Aug 1692, Isle of Wight Deed (Bk 1, p.49)
Robert JOHNSON, planter of Lower Parish Isle of Wight, to daughter Mary JOHNSON, wife of James JOHNSON, and her heirs… land on the north side of Corrowaugh Swamp beginning at BOOTHs land…Thomas HOWL?... Acknowledged in open court 9 Aug 1692 by Robert Johnson and his wife Katherine.

She married James Johns(t)on[2] about 1692, but certainly before 30 January 1745/6.[3]

Mary is named in her husband James' Will executed 30 January 1745/6, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.[3]

It is believed she died sometime after James in Isle of Wight County.

Research Notes

Disputed Father

There is controversy over which Robert Johnson belongs with this family group. The will of Robert Johnson who died 1733 was previously included with Mary's profile.

"She was called "younger daughter Mary Johnson" in her father's will, her husband James Johnson was called "son" although it is his son-in-law.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Does anyone know why the "Unknown" template is attached to this profile?

The profile states "controversy over which Robert Johnson belongs with this family group".

What is the identity of this profile? Is she:

1) The wife of James Johnson (abt.1662-bef.1747)?

2) The daughter of Robert Johnson (1643-bef.1733)?

3) Proven to be #1 AND #2?

If NOT #2, then is her LNAB known?

posted by Ken Spratlin
Is there a reliable source for her husband James' LNAB to be Johnston with a "t"? His Will lists Johnson. The 1692 deed lists Johnson.

Johnson-105801 and Johnson-3381 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles most likely are attempting to represent the same person. The deed of gift was to Mary Johnson the wife of James Johnson.

The ancestors of Lyndon Johnson are tied up in this mess...I am going to take on trying to clean things up.

This Mary Johnson was married to James Johnson. Her father was Robert Johnson. Robert and James may have been related. Robert's father and grandfather were both John Johnson.
