Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Thomas Johnson was born on 24 Mar 1801, and christened on 16 Apr 1801 in Rainford, Lancashire. He was the son of John and Betty Johnson.

Thomas may possibly have married Hannah Wilson on 12 Apr 1824 at St Mary's Church in Hale, Lancashire, by licence. Both were of the local parish; Thomas was a farmer, Hannah a spinster; Thomas' address was given in the marriage bond as Hale bank.

By June 6th 1841, Thomas' mother had probably died; Thomas and Hannah were living in Catchal Moss, Eccleston with Thomas' father, who was a farmer, and his unmarried sister Betty. Thomas' occupation was recorded as relieving officer. A female servant, 13-year-old Ellen Owen, was also in the household.

There is no death registration for a Hannah Johnson in her 40s listed on the GRO website in 1841-2 in Prescot or nearby districts.

Thomas married Elizabeth Shaw on 3 May 1842 at Huyton Parish Church, Lancashire, by licence. Both were of full age (21 or more), and according to both the marriage record and the bond, neither had been married before. Thomas was a farmer of Eccleston; Elizabeth was of Knowsley. Their fathers were named as John Johnson (farmer) and Francis Shaw (park keeper). The witnesses were John Shaw and Betty Johnson. Thomas was described in the marriage bond as a gentleman.

If Thomas had a previous marriage to Hannah Wilson, it's not clear when she died, or why he called himself a bachelor in the records of his marriage to Elizabeth Shaw; but if not, it's unclear who the Hannah Johnson listed between Thomas and his sister Betty in the 1841 census was, since no record of a baptism of a sister Hannah has been found, and there appears to be a full set of baptisms of other siblings for him during the relevant period.

Thomas' father died in 1844 in Prescot district, aged 79.
