Biography

Birth

Birth 1 April 1868 in Summer Hill, New Brunswick, Canada[1]

  • Christening - 27 May 1869 (this was obtained from family book)
  • 1879 John attended Summerhill School until he was about 15 years old.

From Summerhill school records information page: There appears to be several time periods when either no school was held, or no records survived. There also seems to be a high turnover in teachers.

Marriage

25 year old John Alexander, a bachelor farmer from Hampstead, married 17 year old spinster from Gagetown, Mary Elizabeth McKinney on February 13, 1894 in Lower Gagetown, New Brunswick, Canada. [2]

This marriage record lists John's parents as William and Mary Johnson but does not list Mary McKinney's parents.

Witnesses: C.H. Ebbelt and Fred Ebbelt of Gagetown. Married by: Rev. John Perry of Lower Gagetown by License

1901 Census

In 1901, at age 32, John was the head of his own family in Hampstead when Mr. Inch the enumerator came to call. He was a farmer with his 25 year old wife Mary and raising their 4 children in the Methodist faith.
  • Their children in 1901:
    • Edmund (Aug 13 1896) Age 5
    • Annie (Apr 27 1899) Age 2
    • Willie (May 15 1900) Age 1
    • Arthur 9 months old.
  • June 30, 1900 - Birth of son John Arthur.
  • September 5, 1903 - Birth of son Foster Herbert.
  • March 6, 1905 - a farmer in Summerhill, New Brunswick. Birth of son Harold.
  • July 30, 1906 - Birth of son Raymond Bayard.
  • The following information was taken from a "Family Ancestory" book prepared by Sandra Armstrong
    • John and Mary had a daughter "Annie", born about late 1894, who died at birth
    • John and Mary lived at the corner of the Hibernia and Gagetown Roads on a farm later owned by George and Annie (Donald) Sutton.

Did Annie die at birth in 1894? Or are they confusing the baby Annie with Annie Viola, born in 1898? I can find no other birth record or death record for Annie Johnson (or even baby Johnson) born in 1894 - if there was a baby in 1894, it could speak to their reasoning for getting married and why Mary's parents are not listed on the marriage record. Sinnett-50 12:44, 12 June 2013 (EDT)

  • 1911 - John was living in Hampstead Village with his wife and many children. He was a farmer and a lumberman, frequently working in the woods. The family also practiced the Methodist faith.

Their children also attended Summer Hill School. [3]

In 1921[4] John was a farmer and owned their own single family wooden structure house and practiced the faith of the Church of England.
