Dempsey T. Johnson was born on December 9, 1835, in Georgia. Dempsey's Parents; Dempsey's father James Johnson and Dempsey's mother Hepsey Sockwell He moved 3 times during his lifetime. He lived in Carroll County, Georgia, in 1850 and moved to Randolph County, Alabama, by 1908. He died on January 16, 1915, in Graham, Alabama, having lived a long life of 79 years, and was buried there.

Military

Dempsey T. Johnson served two tours of duty during the Civil War. In August 1863 he enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 10th Georgia Cavalry and served until 28 February 1864 when he was discharged at Rome, Georgia. In August 1864 he enlisted as a private in Georgia 10th Infantry Battalion (Bells Battalion) Company C, in Newnan, Georgia and served until surrender. He was paroled in May 1865 in Atlanta, Georgia.
