Biography

Charles was born Carl August Svensson Johansson in Räfvare torp in Ekeby, Östergötland, Sweden to Sven August Johansson and his wife Christina Charlotta Persdotter. The Johansson family, except for the oldest daughter, emigrated from Lilla Herkhult, Ekeby, Östergötlands län to North-America on 25th of August 1884. After their arrival in America, their last names were changed to Johnson. Carl's American name became Charles August Johnson, but there were so many Charles Johnsons that he decided to add the initial N to his name. People referred to him as CAN Johnson. He married Anna Matilda Orthengren, also from Sweden, about 1889. They had four children: Meda, Henry, Edna, and Myrtle. He and his wife were married well over 50 years.
