  9. 29 March 2015 Email - Julia, Ina, Ellen, Hilda & John Johnson, Theresa Ann Quinn, Lawrence Quinn Hi again, Attached are photos of Julia's sisters Ina (my grandmother), Ellen, and Hilda.... her brother John (who never married) when they were in their 20s or so... no dates... Ina is holding my mother Theresa Ann Quinn (deceased) in her arms. Mother was the youngest of four children who grew up. Ina and Lawrence's first baby lived only a few days. This photo would have been taken in Escanaba, MI. My mother was born August 29, 1927 so that means this photo was taken not long afterward.

Hi, Attached is a high resolution scan of your grandfather at age one. I think his eyes especially look like the photo of him as a man that is posted to your site I have one photo which says "Aunt Julia" on it.... I think it is your grandmother by blood ... The issue is I don't know if my mother or grandmother wrote it.... If my mother, it is her. If my grandmother.... don't know who she is! I have photos of some of her sisters -- Ellen, Hilda... she and my grandmother Ina were close. I also have photos of their father (one) and mother (several). They were Swedish but came from Finland... I have some stories that my mother wrote in her essay of Julia and Ina's (my grandmother) escapades as girls. I don't know why Julia and Edward parted, only that they were not together long. Julia married Floyd Foster. They had four children. Floyd was killed in a car accident in 1941. There is more.... I never met Julia but I remember that my grandmother visited her regularly. Also somewhere I have her obituary (I think). I moved a few years ago and some boxes are not yet retrieved / found, much to my frustration. They are here somewhere. >>>>This is actually a GREAT confirmation for me. My grandfather is John Edward leQuia but he died in 2002. I was in high school and not yet interested in genealogy. My parents didn't know much about Julia. They had her name in my family tree as Foster but I think that was from another marriage? It took me awhile to find her birth name. I knew my grandpa was adopted by his grand parents Fred LeQuia and mary Hebert. There was tension in the family, according to my dad. He said Edward would get upset when anyone said grandpa was his son, he would say "he's my brother! Not my son!". You'll find them both on the same censuses listed as Edward and both as the son of Fred and Mary. I would love to see that photo and I can tell you more about Grandpa John if you want. Feel free to use anything from my page. He was pretty quiet as i remember him. Grandma Peggy was the loud one. Haha. Do you know why Edward and Julia parted? I have suspected age may have played a part. I'd like to learn more about Julia since she is my great grandmother by blood. May I check out the photo? Nancy A. Carter, granddaughter of Ina Amelia Johnson Quinn McMurray and Lawrence Michael Quinn, great-granddaughter of Charles Johnson (Carl Johannson) and Johanna Sand (or Harma Rain? - that is another question-- whoever she is I have photos of her!)

Hi Katie, A photo of Julia Johnson is in the foreground. I might re-scan this at 600 dpi... More details might be revealed. The photo itself is smaller. Julia and her husband Floyd Foster had 7 children, not 4. I wrote that in error last night. They were. 12. 12.0 12.1 12.2 01 April 2015 - JOHNSON, FOSTER, SAND, REIN Families
Hi Katie, I so appreciate you sharing information and pictures with me! It is a part of the family that has been hard for me to find and one that I know very little about. I loved the picture of my grandpa. I can see his face in there and also he looks a lot like my dad Lawrence as a baby. Such a cute photo! I might have mentioned that I really like this one when I first saw it... his smile or something.... Thank you for the other pictures as well. I wish I had one of Edward LeQuia to compare. I see some similarities in the appearance of the family. Actually the obituary you sent me of L.D. Ommer Foster was interesting because he looks a lot like my grandpa and dad as well. They are a nice looking family. I am 99% certain I don't have one of Edward LeQuia... no wedding photos for example. This one came from my mother's album that she made as a child and was heavier on the children than the adults for her early years (and before she was born). I hope that one picture really is my Julia! It sounds likely. Yes-- given the writing on the back "Aunt Julia" and my memory of mother telling me that was her when I was a child. When you say the family was Swedish but came from Finland, does that mean they were born in Sweden? Just the kids or the parents Charles and Johanna too? Or were their parents born in Sweden? No. Best as I can tell they were both born in Finland but it is a part of Finland that to this day most of the people speak Swedish as their first language and identify as Swedish. I now understand what my grandmother Ina Amelia Johnson meant when she told me that we were Swedish with "a touch of Finnish." In the US census reports, sometimes it was written they were Finnish, sometimes Swedish. From John Johnson's obituary I learned that he was born in Skars, Finland so that is when I figured out what my grandmother meant. She had a Swedish Bible (don't know where that went... probably her youngest son). She also told me that we Swedes don't put milk and sugar in our tea like the English... we drink it black. (So that is how I drink my tea to this day....) I am glad Julia had a better marriage with Floyd Foster. They must have at least had an okay one to have had 7 children! Its too bad he was killed in a car accident though. Yes, I think so but there also was tragedy. You will see a reference it in my mother's essay, written when she was about 16. I am sending you the first three pages, two of which relate to Julia and the Johnsons. In my mother's essay she says "Julia's mind slipped" (probably grandma's words). The other night after you wrote me back, I tried to figure out a timeline. I had assumed it was after the car accident but it was not. In 1939 she was listed in residence with her husband (and children). In the 1940 census she was a patient in an institution in Flint, Mi. As far as I know, she was institutionalized for the rest of her life, some 40 years. Somewhere I once had the information of which one she was in when she died. I think it was in Ann Arbor. I remember grandma had a distance to drive to go visit her, which she did a few times a year, and wrote to her often. (Grandma was good at writing letters.) I remember grandma say, probably in the 1960s, that Julia no longer needed to be institutionalized but she had nowhere else to go (or was afraid to go). Of course, these days, if that had been the case, she would have been released whether she wanted to be or not. I don't know what happened... Julia would have been about 40 at the time and her youngest child about 2 years old. The oldest girl Loretta Hildred Foster Johnson Blied would have been 17 or 18 when Floyd Foster was killed in the car accident. Perhaps she became head of the family.... She did not marry until 1945, best as I can tell to a James Orley Johnson If you ever come across her obituary and happen to scan it, I would love to see it! Or even those essays. But no worries either way, I am appreciative and surprised by all the things you have already sent me! Thank you. Yes... after I return from Easter travels (leaving tomorrow) and when it is warmer (finally) I will go across the road into the guest room / garage and look for more materials. When you had in parentheses “great-granddaughter of Charles Johnson (Carl Johannson) and Johanna Sand (or Harma Rain?)” Do you mean that those are other names of Charles and Johanna? I was taking it from your email that your grandma referred to Johanna Sand as Harma Rein? I wonder if they Americanized the name for some reason. But not sure how they would get Rein? When I was searching for the parents of Charles and Johanna on familysearch.org I came across a John E Reen and a Sophia Isaacson I believe for Charles. Does Reen tie in with Rein/Rain? Carl Johannson was another name given in the census for Charles Johnson.... the first one he appeared in. Only in grandma's materials did I find a reference to Harma Rain (all of the photos and also her online marriage certificate). This is a mystery. You are right for Charles ... his parents are listed on the marriage record as John E Reen and a Sophia Isaacson.. and I have found Reins (from Finland as I recall) in Felch, MI. So Rain might equal Reen might equal Rein. Oh... I just found a Rein and Isaacson in the same household in Felch (both male). More later if it turns out. I appreciated you sharing your transcriptions and dates as well. Very helpful! I am going to fill it all into my genealogy software and book. I am excited to look up more information on Skars, Finland as well. Its kind of funny that I have Finnish and Swedish that I didn’t know of because my husband is part Swedish on his dad’s side and part Finnish on his mom’s side. Kind of interesting we share that history now! I have exact birth and death dates on many.... Anyway thank you so much! You gave me a wealth of information, photos and leads to go on. I am happy to know a part of my grandpa that I never knew before. Oddly enough, the night before you emailed me I smelled my grandpa’s cigars that he used to smoke in our bedroom and I was very puzzled. Maybe there’s something to that. It’s a nice thought to think he is around somewhere.  :-) Maybe so (about your grandpa).... For some reason, I felt I had to return to my genealogy work this past month when I should have been doing other things! Synchronicity perhaps. Nancy I hope to hear from you again soon! - Katie LeQuia Rowland
