Biography

Hiram Orton Johnson, son of John Broadhead Johnson and Lucy Merwin, was born on 1 March 1840 in Saline, Washtenaw county, Michigan. ^[1]

In 1850 Hiram Johnson is recorded as being ten years of age and living in the household of his father in Porter county, Indiana. ^[2]

During the U.S. Civil War, Hiram O. Johnson entered military service on 7 August 1862 at Jackson, Indiana. On 12 August 1862 he mustered in Chicago, Illinois. He was a private in Company M, 1st Illinois Light Artillery. Hiram is described as being 5 feet 9 3/4 inches tall, with light hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion. He deserted on 6 February 1863. ^[3] Hiram seems later to have joined Company H, 9th Indiana Infantry, in which two of his brothers also served. ^[4]

Hiram wed Martha Olinger on 24 June 1866 in Porter county, Indiana. ^{[5] [6]} Hiram and Martha had at least one daughter, Elsie (Johnson) Tefft, born about 1868.

In 1920 Hiram Johnson, widower, is recorded as being seventy-nine years of age and living in Spokane, Spokane county, Washington. With him was living his widowed daughter, Elsie Tefft. ^[7]

In 1924 Hiram O. Johnson was admitted to the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, Los Angeles county, California. ^[8]

Hiram Orton Johnson died on 14 April 1929 in Spokane, Spokane county, Washington. ^[9]
