born Karl Jensen
Charles came to the United States July 10, 1868 with the name Carl Jensen and worked at different kinds of work near Cedar Falls, Iowa. Because there were so many Carl Jensens in the area, he went to court to change his name. He took out his first papers Sept 24, 1875 in Waterloo, and received his naturalization papers Feb 25, 1882 at Hampton, Iowa. He spent one winter at Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he helped build the Union Pacific Railroad bridge across the Missouri river. He then went back to Cedar Falls, where he spent a few years in a grain elevator. In 1878, he came to Franklin Co, Iowa and purchased a tract of raw prairie in 1884 and set up the necessary buildings. He farmed this land until he retired and moved to Latimer, Iowa in the spring of 1907, where he bought the residence later occupied by Harry Jensen. The farm was rented to his son, Albert J. Johnson, and is now owned by Mrs. Irvin Johnson (Irvin is the son of Albert). For many years, Charles worked as a mason. He was a charter member of St. John's Church, southeast of Coulter, Iowa. He helped organize the Latimer Cooperative Creamery and was also a board member when the bank in Latimer was reorganized and incorporated as the State Bank of Latimer. He was elected mayor of Latimer.
