Biography

Gunild was born on December 25, 1854, to Sigurd Johnson and Anna (Olsen) Johnson of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.[1]

On July 7, 1870, Gunild, or Julia as she preferred, was 15 years old and living on the family farm in Iosco Township, Waseca County, Minnesota, with her parents and six siblings.[2]

On June 9, 1880, Julia was 25 years old and living with her parents and three siblings on the family farm in Iosco Township.[3]

Julia married Ivar Hillestad on February 5, 1884, in Blooming Grove Township, Waseca County, Minnesota.[4][5][6] The couple had several children, including:

  1. Kjersti Charlotte (1891-1967), m. John Harrison Kolb (1888-1963)
  2. Sigurd Irwin (1893-1969)
  3. Ann Constance "Dikka" (1897-1987), m. Fordyce Ely (1898-1968)

On June 5, 1900, Julia (45) and Ivar (47) were living with their children - Kjersti (8), Sigurd (6) and Constance (3) - plus Ivar's niece, Hilda Bergdahl (17), in the village of Fosston, Minnesota, where Ivar listed his occupation as "general merchant."[6]

On April 23, 1910, Gunild (55) and Ivar (57) were living with their children Kjersti (18), Sigurd (16) and Anne (12) in Fosston, Minnesota, where Ivar stated that his occupation was commercial traveler in the grocery industry.[7]

On January 3, 1920, Gunhild (65) and Ivar (67) were living in St. Paul, Minnesota, with their children Sigurd (26) and Dikka (22).[8] Ivar listed his occupation as assistant weight master at a grain elevator.[8]

Julia's husband Ivar passed away on October 11, 1925.[9]

On April 9, 1930, Gunild, 75 years old and widowed, was living with her son Sigurd (36), a drug store pharmacist, in St. Paul, Minnesota.[10] Julia was a member of Landstad church and took an active interest in work connected with it. Possessed a quiet and kindly nature, she was active in church work in St. Paul up until her final illness. She was also a member of the Minnesota Sunshine Society.

Julia passed away on December 20, 1935, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.[1][11] She is buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Roseville, Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA.[1]
