Ernest was born in 1881. He is the son of William Johnson and Christina Lovell.[1] At the time of enlistment for the South African War, Ernest was a grocer. He was a Sergeant Saddler on his discharge.[2] He married Annie Hankey in 1907.[3] Later he worked for the Nelson Harbour Board on dredging and wharf repairs.[4]He passed away in 1959.[5] His ashes are interred in Block 1 Plot 11 of the Cremation Lawan at Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson.[6]
Ernest's will[7] lists his children: Malcolm,[8] Ernest Leonard,[9] Hazel McKenzie,[10] Edith Garner,[11] Olive Christina Slaven [12] and William.[13]
