Biography

Nelly Johnson was born at Waitara near New Plymouth in Taranaki, New Zealand on 15th August 1876, ^[1] the seventh child and second daughter of Bill Johnson and Jane Williams Marshall. She was baptised at St Mary's Anglican Church in New Plymouth when she was five months old. ^[2]

Nothing is known of Nelly's early life until …just days after her 20th birthday… she married William Graham [Bill] Crozier on 16th August 1896 at the home of Bill's parents …Graham Crozier and Amelia nee Baldwin… at Inglewood near New Plymouth.

Over the next 14 years Nelly and Bill had nine children.

Nelly died at the age of 34 on 2nd March 1911 at New Plymouth Hospital. ^[3] Her death occurred as the result of medical complications following the birth of her ninth child on 31st January 1876. Nine children aged between 14 years and 4 weeks were left without their mother. Two days after her death …ie, on 4th March 1911… Nelly was buried at Inglewood Cemetery. ^[4]
