In the 1850 census of Cabell County, Virginia the Johnson family resided in Cabell County, Virginia. Merritt Johnson was shown as head of the household and his wife was listed as Rhodie Adkins. Their children were listed with only their given names. For this reason some researchers concluded either Rhoda was not married to Merritt Johnson or that the children's surname was Adkins.[1]
