Biography

Jesse, son of Daniel Johnson and [[Hubbard-7523|Elizabeth Hubbard], was born on Nov 7, 1745 in Middletown and baptized 10 Nov 1745 at 1st Church.[1][2] He died on 30 Apr 1832 at Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, at his home, age 86 and was buried in Cherry Valley Cemetery there.[3][4]

He married first on 27 Feb 1769, at Middletown, Hartford County, CT, Mary STEVENSON, daughter of John STEPHENSON/STEVENSON and Susannah SAVAGE.[5][6] On 26 Mar 1769 at Chatham, Middlesex County, CT, Jesse and his wife confessed and were admitted to the church on 8 Oct 1769.[7] Children (surname JOHNSON):[8]

In Mar 1812, Jesse married second Abigail BUTLER (b. Oct 1751; d. 31 Oct 1834 Madison, NY; widow of Samuel GOODWIN).[9][10]

The 1790 census of Chatham, Middlesex County, CT, listed Jessy Johnson with 5 males under 16, 1 male 16+, and 8 females.[11]

The 1800 census of Middletown, Middlesex County, CT, listed Jesse Johnson with 1 male under 10 (son Jesse), 1 male 10-15 (son Erastus), 1 male 45+ (himself), 3 females 16-25 (daughters Ruth, Lucy, Sally Maria), and 1 female 45+ (wife Mary).[12]

In 1804, Jesse and Mary removed to Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, after their eldest son died at sea. Jesse was influenced in this decision by Dr Joseph White formerly of Chatham and purchased a farm 1.5 miles south of the village.[13]

The 1810 census of Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, listed Jesse Johnson with 1 male 10-15, 2 males 16-25 (sons Jesse, Erastus), 1 male 45+ (himself), 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 44+.[14]

The 1820 census of Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, listed Jesse Johnson with 1 male 10-15, 1 male 45+ (himself), 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 45+ (wife Abigail).[15]

The 1830 census of Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, listed Jesse Johnson with 1 male 10-14, 1 male 80-89 (himself), 1 female 80-89 (wife Abigail), and 1 free colored female 24-35.[16]
