THOUGHTS: James Thomas Johnson, who is believed to be 1/4 Blackfoot Indian plus Swedish, married his said to-be-full-blooded Cherokee American Indian wife, Easter Lavinia Christopher. Easter Lavinia's mother walked the Trail of Tears in 1838-1839. Her daughter, Great Grandmother Mildred Jane Johnson Pippin was one of their 16 children! She had a brother, Noble Doc Johnson, who I learned from a cousin descendant was a sharecropper when a kid and his (and Mildred's) family lived this sharecropper life. As a child Noble could pick up to 600 lbs a day of cotton. James Thomas and Easter moved by covered wagon to and from Texas and Arkansas, but most of the time they were residents of Arkansas. At one time the family lived on a houseboat and just two weeks after they moved, the houseboat sank because the children had been picking off the tar which held the boat together. Why would they want the tar? They used it as chewing gum! This story provided through the work of Cheryl Zeimer on Ancestry.com.

CHILDREN OF MILDRED AND ELBERT PIPPIN:

1930 Census, 1844 Silver St., Sedgwick, Wichita KS taken April 9: Elbert, the son of "Max" and Mary Pippin is living with them, along with his bride Mildred. Elbert is 19; bride Mildred is 17. Elbert and Mildred married when she was 16 and he 19. Elbert was born in TX; Mildred in TX. Her parents are from OK; his from TN. Dad Max is 58 and rents their home; Mom Mary is 53. They have other children besides Elbert, namely: Alvin age 18, born in TX and Bessie 16 born in OK. Max is a building carpenter; son Alvin is a laborer in brick home construction; Elbert works odd jobs. So, this household seems to have moved a bit - from TN to TX, to OK and to KS! Note: The 1920 census lists Bessie as born in Texas but this one is Okla.
In the 1937 City Directory for Wichita Kansas we find the following Pippins: Seven yrs after the 1930 census, son Alvin is a factory worker at Coleman Lamp and Stove Co. He lives at 1702 S. St. Francis Ave. He appears not to be married. Charles D. Pippin is married to Grace and is a building contractor living at 2812 E lst. I do not know what the "h do" stands for. Comer Douglas Pippin is married to an Othel A. (Othelia? Jenkins) and works with Alvin at the Coleman plant. Edward and Winnie may not be of this line. Elbert and Mildred live at 1702 S. St. and Francis Av. in Wichita and he works as a surveyor. NOTE: Two of the sons are working at the Coleman factory in 1937 and 1939. In 1938 Elbert L. is also working at Coleman! A family affair!!

1940 CENSUS Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas - Mildred is 28 and a wife to Elbert Pippin, who is 30. They live at 1017 Fern Street in Wichita KS. They lived in a home which was not a farm, but it may well have been a multi-family dwelling such as apartments. Elbert completed his 1st year of high school, but Mildred stopped after the 7th grade. According to this census he was born in OK and she in TX! When I looked at the 1920 Census, Elbert was born in Tennessee. Three daughters were living with them: Mildred who was 10; Wanda D. who was 6; and Norma J. who was just 4. All their daughters were born in Kansas.
