William Dryden, ancestor of the name in Wiregrass Georgia, was born in Bladen County, NC about 1772, son of John Dryden, R.S. In his youth, he moved with his parents to Burke County, GA where they were living in 1790. He either moved to Jefferson County or was annexed to it out of Burke; and was married there about 1796 to Elizabeth, daughter of James Johnson of Jefferson County. A deed of gift to her from her father, dated April 19, 1804 is of record there in Deed Book "E", Page 218. To Mr. and Mrs. Dryden were born eight children. After leaving Jefferson County, the Dryden's moved to Warren County where the elder Dryden (John), died in 1796. The son, William, qualified August 24, 1796 as administrator of the estate. William Dryden continued living there until about 1801-1802 when he moved to Liberty County. He had 300 acres of headright land there surveyed for him February 11, 1802, and he made his home thereon. Wayne County, across the river from Liberty, having been laid out as a new county, Mr. Dryden moved there about 1808-1810. He was a Private in the militia detachment stationed at Fort Wayne on the Wayne County frontier, under Capt. Richard Walker, in 1814, 1815, in the War of 1812. Soon after Appling County was laid out in 1818, joining to Wayne, he moved there and settled in the 4th Land District, later moving on to the 9th District in present Pearce County. He was cut out of Appling into Ware County in 1825. An election precinct was established by the legislature December 20, 1823, at his house "near the Great Satilla River" in what was then Appling County. William Dryden and wife, Elizabeth and daughter, Nancy, were charter members of High Bluff Baptist Church in Wayne (now Brantley) County when it was constituted June 30, 1819. Huxford's (Vol. VI) Page 311 - corrections: It is now known that he did not die "about 1840 in Ware County" as was stated, but that he moved to Carroll County, GA, in the 1830s where he appears in the 1840 Census and where he died in 1855. William and his wife, Elizabeth, had another son unknown to descendants in this area; he was named Elias Dryden, born 1818, and who went with his parents when they moved from Wayne or Ware County to Carroll County. Thomas Dryden, named as a son in Vol. III, also went with his parents to Carroll County and married Louisa Cole in that part of the State, later returning to Ware County. Elias Dryden, however, remained there, later moving to Cleburne County, Alabama. A descendant of Elias Dryden has lately furnished the Compiler with this information, and with dates of birth and death of William Dryden and wife, as follows: William Dryden, born May 9, 1771, died June 16, 1855. Elizabeth, his wife, born Oct. 10, 1773, died March 18, 1860. Carroll County estate records show Joseph Coggins was appointed administrator of the William Dryden estate, Feb. 4, 1856. The inventory of his estate show it amounted to $2,110.40 (a fairly good sized estate for those days). The son, Elias Dryden, married in Carroll County, Feb. 17, 1835, to Arrena Sides, and later on Dec. 9, 1856, to Lucinda Brown. Elias should be added to the list of children as given in Vol. III.
