Biography

John Johnson was born 24 Jun 1736 at Waterbury, Connecticut [1]. The identities of his parents (not certain nor supported by any sources yet put forth) may have been Sarah (Moses; 1714-) and Silas Johnson (1713-) [2].

John Johnson left his home in Connecticut and went to Rutland, Vermont, in 1761. After a brief stay, he went back to Connecticut, but subsequently returned to Vermont, and located in Rutland [3].

He married Mahittable Sperry (1739 - 1836), with whom he may have had nine children. These are listed in their online memorial sites:

  • Zachariah Johnson, born 1765 and died 1837
  • Endearing Johnson, born 1777 and died 1852
  • Zina Johnson, born 1780 and died 1863
  • John R. Johnson, born 1782 and died 1841

John Johnson died 18 Feb 1808 in West Rutland, Vermont. His grave is in Pleasant Street Cemetery, West Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont.

Notes

The cited online family tree database currently represents that John Johnson may have had a second wife named Mahitable or Mehitable (Downs) (1709-1788), however in view of their widely disparate ages, this would have been highly unlikely. She was his mother-in-law.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Johnson-69671 and Johnson-4684 appear to represent the same person because: Both represent the father of Zina Johnson, who also is duplicated. Likewise Mehitable, his wife , as well as others in this lineage.
