Charles Johnson is a part of US Black heritage.

Charles F. Johnson was born in January[1][2] about 1843[3]-1847[4] in Chicago[5], Illinois or New Haven[1], Connecticut[4][2][6]. His parents were born in Connecticut.[2][6] He was the husband[1] of Harriet Thompson, Phebe Ann Bryan[4], and Georgianna. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

He stood about 5'6" (1.68m) tall with a dark complexion, brown eyes, and black hair when he enlisted with the military in 1863.[5]

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company H of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 20 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 21 April 1863 from Chicago, Illinois. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[3]
