Biography

This profile is part of the Johnson Name Study.

William's origins are a bit sketchy but here is what we know.

There is a possible relationship of William Johnson to John Johnson and Judith Stith Johnson as shown by the 1850 census for Wayne County, Virginia (later West Virginia). In the 1850 census he was age 17 and resided in the household of John and Judah Johnson in Wayne County, Virginia.[1] A normal conclusion from the census would appear to be Elattus (sic), Margerite, and William were the children of John and Judah. However, the census taker's handwriting for the age of William is difficult to read, while at first glance it looks like 17 it may well have been 7 since he was marked as attending school within the year. IF his age was 7 (born about 1843) then he may in all likelihood have been the eldest child of William Burney Johnson or a son of a previous unknown marriage for Eclatus Johnson.

William married Usley (sic Ursula) Lowe on 16 Jan 1851 in Lawrence Co., OH.[2]

He was age 24, born Virginia and residing in Wayne County, Virginia in 1860 next door to Eclatis Johnson and between James Stith and Elias Stith. [3]

William Johnson and his wife Ursley sold 100 acres on Silas Branch of Gragston Creek to Thomas Stone in 1856. The description of the property mentions a corner to John Ferguson and a survey made for A. Murphey.[4]

In the 1880 census William and his family resided in the Ceredo Dist of Wayne County, West Virginia and he was working on a farm.[5]

Totally speculative! Possible death record: William F. Johnson died 20 Dec 1887 in Ironton, Ohio. He was married at the time of his death, age 51 years, and born Scott County, Virginia. Curiously his race was not given.[6]
