Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)

Hannah was born in 1788.

The Quaker meeting minutes from Cane Creek NC MM referenced below contain the genealogy of Hannah's family as follows:

Jesse Johnson (parents John and Elizabeth) b. 10 Jul 1745 in Pennsylvania m. in 1769 Hannah Hadley (parents Joshua and Patience Brown) b. 26 Feb 1749 in Pennsylvania

Their children:

  • John b 23 Jul 1767
  • Isaac b. 14 Jul 1774
  • Jesse b. 9 Feb 1776
  • Jeremiah b. 1 Apr 1779
  • Simon b. 19 Nov 1783
  • Lydia b. 10 Apr 1786
  • Hannah b. 10 Oct 1788
  • (There is also a Jonathan born in 1781 who appears in later Quaker records as a son.)

Research Notes

The family bible referenced below records the births, deaths marriages of only Jesse Johnson, his wife Hannah Johnson (does not say Hadley or give her maiden name), their daughter Hannah and her two sons Enos Johnson and Matthias Johnson, with their spouses and children.

There is no spouse recorded for Hannah Johnson in any of the references below and a Hannah Johnson is found in the Bastardy Bonds records from the year 1811 (when her son Enos was born), with bonds posted from Thomas Hadley (if her mother was Hannah Hadley Johnson, this could be her uncle), Aaron Johnson (brother Isaac Johnson had a son Aaron in 1801 but he would be too young?) and S. Culberson).

Quaker records for Women's MM 1 May 1813 include a complaint against Hannah Johnson for having a child in an unmarried state and disowned 5 June 1813. (They also include two siblings - Jonathan and Jesse Jr - who removed from Cane Creek MM to Miami Ohio MM in 1807 and 1810, and a record from 1807 that a Hannah Johnson, with husband and children who did the same, and Elizabeth Johnson and husband in 1810.)

Could she have married Joshua Johnson (Johnson-8553), son of David Johnson and Ruth McPherson, as his second wife? There are some family histories that say this but with no evidence. The estate file for Joshua Johnson who died 1830 in Chatham County leaves a widow Hannah.

There is an 1820 Census for a Joshua Johnson in Chatham County:

  • 2 males < 10, 1 boy 10-16, 1 male 26-44
  • 3 females < 10, 1 female 10-16
  • 2 females 16-26

There is a Hannah Johnson b. 1795 who seems to be a widow in the 1840 Census in Chatham County and could be widow of Joshua Johnson:

1 male <5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30 1 female 10-15, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 50-60

In the 1850 Census she has living with dau. Phebe Whitt (b. 1825) with her husband John. Also in 1850 Census - son Joseph (b. 1827) with wife Ann Maria (Henderson) and infant dau. Jerusha.

This Hannah has a probate record in 1857 with admins James Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Hezekiah Henderson (husband of step-dau Annie), with John Whitt (husband of dau. Phoebe) mentioned.

Thank you for that Eric. My source (the Duncan-Johnson Family Tree) looks to have been taken from the Quaker record here because it is exactly the same as far as Jesse and Hannah (Hadley) Johnson and their children.

What I don't see is any source that Hannah Johnson married a Shipman and moved west... do you have that?

Also, thanks for the Jesse Johnson Bible link... this looks to be "my" Jesse Johnson, daughter Hannah because of her son Matthias, who is a known ancestor in my family. But with only the few pages and only the one daughter listed, I am wondering why...

Correct daughter of Jesse Johnson and Hannah Hadley. See also:
