Charles Ture Johnson born Karl Ture Johannson was born April 29, 1870 in Stora Malka, Södermanlands län, Sweden.[1][2][3] He was a son of Johan August Pehr Johansson and Inga Lena Jonasdotter.[1][2]
Charles received permission to leave Sweden on October 15, 1881 in Tornavalla, Ostergotland, Sweden.[3] He immigrated to the States in 1882 at the age of 12 for a better life, he was very poor. He got off the boat in New York. His cousin or brother came and got him, took him to town and put him in a room and disappeared. He sold newspapers, while doing this a man from out of state told him that if he came to Kansas and kept his store clean, he would board him and put him through school. So, he went to Kansas with the man and went to school and became an engineer.
Charles wanted to be a train engineer, but instead married Laura Janette Daykin on January 29, 1893 in Imogene, Iowa, United States.[4] They had the following children:[5][6][7]
On December 5, 1927 Charles remarried to Anna Elizabeth Gilbert in Huntersville, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, United States.[8][9][10]
Charles eventually came to work as an engineer in a meat packing plant with his son-in-law, Leonard. Charles had a pet bear which he had chained behind the plant for many years. Until there was a problem with children taunting the bear and grandpa was afraid he might hurt someone. So the bear was put in a zoo somewhere.
Charles Ture Johnson died February 17, 1944 in Hutchinson, Reno, Kansas. He is buried at Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas, United States.[11]
