Biography

William's approximate birth date is based on his marriage record and the 1830 census which shows he was born born between 1760 and 1770.[1] Researchers on Family Search have refined the date to 1763,[2] He may been born in North Carolina although there is no definitive proof.[3] The records we do have seem to indicate he was born in Virginia. We know he married in Franklin Co. in 1786 and there was a William in the tax lists every year after 1786 through 1803 in Franklin Co. We also have his deeds in Franklin Co. In addition a Chancery Court Lawsuit (1778-1789) found in Franklin County, Virginia shows John Johnson was the father of William Johnson.[4]

William Johnson married on 13 Sep 1786 in Franklin County, Virginia Edith (Edie) Watson, daughter of John Watson. She was mentioned in his will 1783. Please note the marriage as published in Wingfield's Marriage Bonds of Franklin County, Virginia INCORRECTLY lists Alexander Watson as her father. Alexander was her brother. [5]

Land records in Franklin County, Virginia show he had several transactions in 1793 and 1794. [6] [7] On 7 Apr 1794, William Johnston or Johnson sold 45 acres of land to James Watson, possibly a relative. It was described was described as intersecting Coles Old Line, near Coles Pointers. On the same date, but recorded later, William bought 100 acres, from Henry Landers, described as being on the waters of Little Creek, beginning at Coles Corner pointers.[8][9]

Also in 1793 William and his wife Edith along with several other Johnson's were witnesses in the Franklin County Court Case Johnson vs Toney. [10]

"Edy", the wife of William Johnson apparently received 150 acres from the partition of her father John Watson's land in 1800.[11]

Shortly after the above land transactions and court appearances William Johnson moved to Kentucky where he acquired two land grants in Floyd County, Kentucky. One in 1810 for 161 acres on Beaver Creek.[12] The second in 1816 for 50 acres on Cars Fk, Kentucky River. [13] The 50 acre tract of land on Carrs Fork of the Kentucky River was sold to William Rogers in 1820.[14].

Additionally on 28 Feb 1814 William Johnson purchased 380 acres of land on the right hand fork of Beaver Creek from Alexander Lackey, etc.[15] He continued to purchase land on 30 July 1814 when William Johnson acquired 60 acres on right fork of Beaver Creek from John Justice. [16] Then on 19 Oct 1818 John Justice again sold 60 acres on Beaver Creek to William Johnson. Witnesses were John Hoff, Simon Justice and Edmon Justice. [17]

William is the one in the 1810 [18]& 1820 Floyd County, Kentucky census who came from Franklin Co., VA.[19] He’s also in 1830 Census but not 1840. His wife is in 1850 Eada Johnson, residing in household 220 for Milton Salisbury and wife Levicey. [20] and 1860 and identified correctly at this site[21]

Floyd County, Kentucky Court records for August 1813 report William Johnson, Patrick Johnson Sr., Patrick Johnson, Jr. and John Justice were appointed to mark a road from William Martin's to the Cumberland Mountains. [22] Then in May 1814 William Johnson was appointed surveyor of the road from his house to the gap of Millstone. [23]

He was always in Floyd Co from 1810-1831. As recorded in Floyd Co court records his taxable property for 1815 included: 1 tith, 4 horses at $150.00 and 461 acres of 3rd rate land at 1 dollar, Total amount $581.00.[24]

He was appointed Surveyor of the road from the mouth of Dry Branch to the top of the mountain at the head of Beaver Creek in February 1823. Hands on Beaver Creek above James Martin were ordered to assist him. [25]

William seemed to sell off his land to his children in the 1820s although Bluford was not one of them. Floyd County, Kentucky Deed Book B includes a series of consecutive deeds for land on Beaver Creek made on the same dates (recorded 27 Dec 1824) from William Johnson to several persons suggesting they are related to him. In addition the witnesses to these deeds are the same persons (Wm Sailsbury, John Johnson, Patrick Johnson, Levi Johnson, Icabod McBrayer, Frederick Stambaugh, Philip Stambaugh, and Jacob Sanders or Lander). Floyd Co KY Deed Book B: p 421 William Johnson to John Johnson; p 422 William Johnson to Levy Johnson; William Johnson to Philip Stambaugh; p 423 William Johnson to Patrick Johnson, William Johnson to Eli Johnson . [26] The 1820 census for Floyd County, Kentucky shows many of the persons mentioned in this deed were living as close neighbors. On the same census page are listed Ichabod McBrayer, William Salsberry, Philip Stambaugh (Jr and Senr), William Johnson, Patrick Johnson, William Isaacs and Eli Johnson. [27]The deed between William Johnson and Levy Johnson includes a notation: "said William Johnson is to have the houses and as much land as he can tend for himself and his wife their lifetime." Another deed recorded in 1829 between Herod Johnson and his wife Elizabeth to Levey Johnson for 50 acres on the right hand fork of Beaver Creek mentions a boundary with William Johnson. [28]

An additional family relationship is suggested by the following deed from Herod Johnson to John Johnson which cites William several times. [29]

The final bit of paper trail proof connecting William Johnson of Franklin County, Virginia to the man in Floyd County, Kentucky is a deed in which William and his wife Eady described as "of Floyd County, Kentucky" sell property in Franklin County VA.[30]

William Johnson passed away in January 1831. [31][32]

Proposed children of William and Edith/Edy Johnson[33]

John Johnson [34]
Levi Johnson ba 1805[35]
Dicey Johnson [36]
Patrick Johnson Jr[37]
Levisa or Levicey Johnson, daughter of William and Edith, was born about 1814 in Carter Co., KY; married William Sailsberry. [38]
Eli Johnson b 2 May 1796 [39]
Thomas Johnson, who received a land grant for 120 acres on Cars Fk in 1816 near a land patent William Johnson received on Cars Fk in 1816.[40]
Herod Johnson, ba 1799, NC, died ---; wife Elizabeth Isaacs (born abt 1803, Floyd Co KY; died Jackson Co., KY). [41] [42]

Some of William’s assumed children from the deeds are attributed to being the children of Patrick 1771-1850. The Philip Stumbaugh deed: His wife is Dicey Johnson and listed as daughter of Patrick. The deed transactions definitely look like he’s giving land to his children so Dicey should be the daughter of William. I think what’s happened is that anyone not accounted for was grouped under Patrick because no one knew about William or Jacob and possibly John being brothers of Patrick.

Research

There is a pension record for a John Johnson on Fold3 in which his son William of 1828 BEDFORD CO applies for a land warrant for which John was promised but never received. That William is still in BEDFORD in 1830 and is NOT in the correct age group for William who is in Floyd Co., KY.
