Biography

Parentage

Abraham was the only child of Robert Johnson, his mother being Robert’s second wife Mary Herd.[1] He was baptised at North Luffenham, Rutland on 7 July 1577.[2] An article in the New England Historical & Genealogical Register (Volume 8) gives his birth place as North Luffenham, Rutland.[3]

Education

Abraham studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, matriculating in 1591. In 1594 he entered Lincoln's Inn.[4] He never assiduously practised as a barrister, and bought property at South Luffenham, Rutland.[3][4]

Life

In 1618 he was Sheriff of Rutland.[4][5] That year he refused an invitation to be knighted (which would have carried obligations with it).[3]

In his latter years he lived partly in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and in London.[3]

Abraham wrote a life of his father.[6]

His father largely passed over him in his Will, though he did appoint him an Overseer - a less important position than Executor. The Will refers to the possibility that his son Abraham might "after my decease trouble, vexe, molest, sue, or ympleade, or cause to be troubled, vexed sued or ympleaded my executor or executors."[7] This was a source of great grievance to Abraham, who complained about the "covetousness and ambition" of his son Isaac.[3]

Marriages and Children

Abraham married twice.

  • His first wife was Anne Meadows[4], daughter of Robert Meadows of Stamford, Lincolnshire. She died before she reached the age of 20.[3] They married on 9 October 1600 at Stamford, Lincolnshire.[8] She was buried at Stamford, Lincolnshire on 25 August 1603.[9] They had two children:
  • His second wife was Elizabeth Chaderton, daughter of Laurence Chaderton[3][4], one of the translations of the King James version of the Bible and Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. They had five children:

Death

Abraham died in 1649.[4]

Research Notes

Birth Date

There is slight disagreement about his birth date. The Johnson Family article in the New England Historical & Genealogical Register says it was 6 July 1577[3]; Alumni Cantabrigienses says, 5 July.[4]

Misattributed Son

Robert Johnson has previously been shown as son of Abraham and his first wife Anne Meadows. There is no good source for this, and the article in the New England Historical & Genealogical Register on the Johnson family - which draws heavily on an account by Abraham - states clearly that they had just two children: Isaac and Mary.[3]

Son Robert Johnson is listed and biographed in the text "New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial: A Record of the ..., Volume 3 edited by William Richard Cutter: Page 1209" as one of his two immigrant sons (Isaac and Robert).

In texts relating, we read of family strife involving Abraham, including mention of a dishonest executor in his mothers will and his mention of Isaac conning his grandfather into making him heir of all his lands. I am concerned that Isaac may have a hand in making a possible brother Robert 'disappear from record' to further his own gain as he seems to be willing to muddle things for personal gain (according to his father), although I can not ascertain why Abraham may have left out Robert in the purposed writings of 'Gentlemen and Esquire' should it actually be his own writing considering it was 'identified as his writing by a relative'.

I am concerned there was ill will at play in this generation as Isaac seems capable and willing to do.

This is all just conjecture but I have concerns with writing off a brother/son Robert for these purported reasons.
