Biography

Sylvanus was born in 1813. He died in 1902.

He was a brickmaker in Iowa City from 1839. his bricks were used in the interior of the Old Capitol and in the bricks for Mechanic's Academy, which was destroyed in 1897. He was a staunch Democrat. He was an Iowa City Township Trustee in 1848. He was one of the founders of the Iowa State Press when the Iowa Capitol Reporter became a Republican paper in 1860. He was a vice president of the National Democratic Convenstion at Louisville, Kentucky in 1872. He was active in the Old Settlers Association.
