Standard (Port Melbourne, Vic. : 1884 - 1914) Sat 22 Feb 1913 Page 2 ITEMS OF NEWS. ITEMS OF NEWS. Death of Mrs. Thomas Smith. General regret was expressed on Monday last, when it became known that Mrs. Jane Smith, wife of Cr. Thomas Smith, had passed away. Mrs. Smith had been a sufferer for a number of years from diabetes, and, in consequence, her strength had greatly diminished. Last Saturday afternoon she relapsed into a como- tose state, and without regaining consciousness, breathed her last on the Monday morning. The immedi- ate cause of death was diabetic coma. The deceased, who was 56 years of age, was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Peter John- ston, shipwright, of City-road, and was born at Emerald Hill—now known as South Melbourne. She was the mother of six children, three of whom died in infancy, the others— two sons and a daughter—are grown up. The eldest son is manager of Councillor T. Smith's Port Mel- bourne business; the daughter is Mrs O. W. Napthine. Mrs. Smith had been Mayoress, both of South and Port Melbourne, and was noted and es- teemed for the way she engaged in the duties appertaining to the posi- tion, her large-hearted charitable- ness making her beloved by all. As a mark of respect to deceased, the flags were at half-mast, at both South Melbourne and Port Melbourne Town Halls. The interment was of a private character, the remains be- ing buried next to deceased's child- ren, in the Melbourne General Ceme- tery, the Rev. Frederick C. Spurr, of Collins-street Baptist Church, where the family pew is, officiating. The pall-bearers were Cr. T. Smith's two sons, Cr. E. F. Russell, Mayor of Port Melbourne, and Mr. John Tully, the District Chief Ruler of the Rech- abite Order. The sympathy of our townspeople goes out to Cr. Smith, in the irreparable and sad loss he has sustained.
