Biography

Margaret Johnston was born 25 May 1837 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was baptised on 25 June 1837 at Rutherglen. Her parents are listed as James Johnston and Jane Kenier. ^[1]

The 1851 census lists her as a 14 year old student living in Irongate Street, Lanarkshire, with her mother Jane Johnston(41), siblings Jessie Gebbie (19), Thomas Johnston (16), Agnes Johnston (12), Stephen Johnston (9) and 5 other unrelated people.^[2]

Margaret married Hugh Forsyth before 1861.

According the 1861 Scottish census she is 24 years old, living in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire with her husband Hugh Forsyth (24) and daughter Elizabeth (7 months). ^[3]

She died before her daughter Elizabeth's marriage on 29 December 1882 as she is marked as deceased on her daughter's marriage certificate.

Research Note

Not to be confused with Margaret Johnston born the same year but the daughter of Jean not Jane. The following census data is for the daughter of Jean.

The 1841 Scotland Census lists her as living in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. ^[4] Note: Her mother is listed as Jean not Jane so this may be a different family.

The 1851 Scotland Census lists Margaret as living in Factory Lane, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She is a 14 year old power loom weaver living with her parents James (55) and Jane (50) and siblings Jane (18), James (10) and Elisabeth (5).^[5]
