Doctor James Johnston was born in 1685 at Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. He was baptised on 1 February 1685 at Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. At the age of 37 he married Jean Nisbet, daughter of William Nisbet, on 14 January 1722 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He gained the rank of Surgeon in the Royal Navy.
