Susan Johnston was born in Nippising in 1909. She was the daughter of John Johnston and Elizabeth Wilkie. She moved to Fort William with her family in 1914. She was murdered by Gordon Bliss in 1936. Miss Johnston had been employed with the Fort William telephone exchange since 1931, and fellow-employees today were grief-stricken at her sudden death. She was a member of Sapphire Rebekah Lodge an of Wesley United Church. Of quiet, retiring nature, she was held in high esteem by many in the community. Survivors are her father and mother, one brother Arthur, at home; and six sisters, Nellie, Mrs. Norman G. Wrigley, Murillo; Nina, Mrs. W.B. Wissler, Detroit; Verna, Mrs. R.B. Hardman, Fort William and Port Colborne; Berna, Mrs. A.C. Harris, South Brodie Street, Fort William, and Blanche and Gertrude at home. One sister, Lorena, Mrs. H Wright, died at Cardinal, Ont., five years ago, and another sister Hazel, died in Fort William six months ago. The coroner's jury viewed the body of the girl at noon today at the funeral chapel, 200 South May street and adjourned until the formal hearing in the Donald street Police Station, Fort William on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:300 pm. Members of the jury are Joseph Heald, Ward Dyke, J.E. Rutledge, J. Rogers, Frank Holmes, Joseph Habkirk, W. Rutledge, J. Fair and J.A. Kennedy.[1]
