Biography

Name: William used the surname Johnston in Tennessee, then Johnson in Missouri.

Born: About 1816 in Virginia. Year of birth in census records ranged from 1815 to 1817. State of birth was Virginia in two of three census records.

Marriage: A marriage license was issued to William P. Johnston and Fanny Samples in Monroe County, Tennessee on 4 November 1840.[1]

1850: W.P. and Fanny Johnston had three sons and a daughter in Monroe County. They were recorded adjacent to Fanny's father John Samples and stepmother Jemima. [2]

1860: William P. Johnson and Frances were recorded with five sons and one daughter near Pittsburg, Hickory County, Missouri.[3]

1870: William and Frances remained near PIttsburg in Hickory County. Two teenage sons were in their household. Adult son John was recorded adjacent to them. Neighbor Mary Knight, married to Jasper Knight, was probably their daughter.[4]

Farming in 1870: William said he farmed on 100 acres, 30 of which were improved. The farm was worth $1,000. He had two horses, 2 cows, an ox, 14 sheep, and 14 hogs. The farm produced corn, wheat, potatoes, and some molasses.[5]

Two land sales in 1871: On 26 April 1871 William P. Johnson sold 120 acres to Joseph Edde. It was in township 36N, range 21W, section 10. On 14 October 1871 he sold 80 acres to Jasper Knight. It was in township 37N, range 21W, section 3. The first section was about two miles east of Nemo in Green township. Johnson received a land grant patent for 40 of these 120 acres after the sale, in 1873. The second transaction was for land about three miles north of Preston, Hickory County. Jasper Knight was probably married to William's daughter Mary.[6]

Land grant patent: On 1 Feb 1873 William received a federal land patent for 40 acres. The section specified is in Green township, about two miles east of Nemo, in Hickory County. He had actually sold the land in 1871.[7]

Death: After 1873, assuming William was alive when he received the above patent. Place of death unknown. He was not recorded in the 1880 census in Hickory County, nor was he recorded with any of his known children.

Johnson-50209 and Johnston-14273 appear to represent the same person because: Both were married to Fanny or Frances Samples, and both lived in Tennessee and Missouri. I recommend using the approximate years of birth and death from Johnston-14273. He used the surname Johnston in Tennessee, then Johnson in Missouri. -- Lowell Samples
