Donald E. Johnston, 71, of Pocahontas, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died at the Pocahontas Manor Care Center in Pocahontas on Tuesday, February 3, 2004. Cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service at Forest Cemetery is planned for later in the spring.
Donald is survived by his brother, Gordon Johnston of Daniel, Wyoming; three sons, Thomas of Nampa, Idaho, Craig of Stillmore, California, and Scott of Moorpark, California; and his close friend Mary Ford of Pocahontas. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alice Mendes.
Donald, son of Colbert (Cub) and Ethel Thomas Johnston was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on December 6, 1932. In 1936, the family moved to the family farm south of Oskaloosa, which is presently Harvest Point Golf Course. Don attended school in Beacon and Oskaloosa. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1950 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. In 1952, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served for eight years. He served at various stations in California, Hawaii, and Japan. In later years, he enjoyed being a “long haul trucker” and traveled extensively in the United States. He also enjoyed traveling in Canada and Europe with friends.
