James Johnston was born in Canada West to parents John Johnston and Margaret (Odlum/Odlam) Johnston.

The Johnston family (recorded as Johnson) lived in Proton Township, in Grey County, Canada West during the 1851 Census. The household contained John (farmer, age 49) and Margaret (age 27), plus children William (labourer, age 7), James (age 5), Sarah Ann (age 2), and Francis (age 1).
