Did you know Oakfield was home to the largest bird collection of Wisconsin. Delos Hatch was a taxidermist and had many precious specimens of butterflies, birds, animals, etc. In his old age, he took up embroidery and made hundreds of pieces. In 1884 he won Best collection of illustrating Birds of Wisconsin from the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society. Although an old Oakfield History report claims this building was on White St, the award was given and stated the museum was in Oak Center. Delos Hatch, according to old plat maps, always lived near Oak Center, making it seem probable that the museum was located there. Mr Hatch was also a Civil War veteran https://www.facebook.com/OakfieldWIHistory/posts/968336053515056
From FamilySearch Family Tree Profile for Delos Hatch
When he was 12 years of age he moved with his parents to Wisconsin where they settled on a farm at Oak Center. They travelled by train to Chicago, by boat to Sheboygan and with a team of horses over a plank road to Oak Center. During the winter of 1854, the family lived in a log house with 14 people. It was a severe winter with the ground frozen to a depth of seven feet with an average of four and five feet of snow. Often their beds in the attic were covered with snow in the morning. His boyhood days were spent in doing farm work, hunting and fishing.
He was teaching school when the call came for volunteers at the beginning of the Civil War. He enlisted in the 10th Wisconsin Vol. 20 Sep 1861. He was wounded at the Battle of Perryville, KY. and lay on the battlefield for three days before he was taken to the hospital.
About 1877, Delos and his wife, Ellen Johnston, daughter of James and Rebecca (Atkins) Johnston, learned taxidermy and how to preserve bird's eggs. The duties on a 200-acre farm kept him busy most of the day and collecting eggs at night. In 1926, a collection of about 5 thousand eggs including specimens from England, Iceland, Persian Gulf Islands and other countries were in his home. He was a member of several Fraternal organizations including the Sons of Temperance, Loyal Legion, Good Templars, Grand Army of the Republic, and Masons of which he has been a member for over 60 years having taken first degree in 1865 and 2nd degree in 1866.
He lived on a farm 2 ½ miles west of Oakfield for over 20 years. In 1900 he retired from the farm and moved to Oakfield. For a number of years, he maintained a museum that housed his treasures.

He has a valuable collection of old dishes, guns, revolvers, homemade bedspreads, and other items brought to this country by the Pilgrim Fathers.
