Clarence "Jay" Thomas Johnston was born on March 21, 1898 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He was the son of Thomas D. Johnston and Harriet Wilson. He served as a private first class in World War I with the Battery F company of the 125th Field Artillery. He enlisted on April 17, 1917. He was part of the American Expeditionary Force from June 28, 1918 to March 24, 1919.
Clarence married Agnes L. Strandahl on November 20, 1919 in Cleveland. She died as a young woman on August 9, 1922 in Cleveland and was buried at Knollwood Cemetery in Cleveland.
Clarence married Virginia Lucille Francis on September 20, 1935 in Cumberland, Hancock County, West Virginia. They had five children during their marriage.
In 1937 Clarence was listed as an electrician at a radio service shop. He died at the age of 68, on March 23, 1966, in Montgomery, Alabama. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery.
