When a young man the late Mr. Johnston commenced carrying from Murrurundi, which was then the terminus of the railway, to Tamworth, Armidale, Manilla, Inverell, Glen Innes and other parts of the north and north-west. When 24 years old he married Miss Kelly of Tamworth and came to Manilla in 1902, purchasing a property from the late Mr. Pat Woolf at Rushes Creek. His wife died in 1917 and since that time he has mostly resided with his son, Mr. R. J. Johnston at Rushes Creek.
