Sarah Spittal was born in Annan Dumfriesshire about 1826. She was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Spittal.

Sarah was the daughter of Mary Spittal and William Johnstone. She was baptised in Annan on the 2nd of April 1826.[1]

In the 1841 census Sarah Spittle (age 15), F S, living in Summer Hill, Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

In the 1861 census Sarah Irving (age 36) is the wife of William Irving in Cleughside, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

In the 1871 census Sarah Irving (age 45) is the wife of William Irving in Grahamshile Cottage, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

In the 1881 census Sarah Irving (53), wife, in household of William Irving (53) in Butterdale Cottage in Dornock registration district in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Born in Scotland.

Sarah Irving died of Senile decay at the Creighton Royal Institution in Annan in 1900. Her death was reported by her husband, William Irving a ploughman.

MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTION: Dornock Dumfriesshire In memory of Mary Irving daughter of William Irving who died in Ayr 11th December 1871 aged 24 years. Also Margaret Irving his daughter who died at Dornock 5th March 1876 aged 7 years. Also Sarah Johnston his wife who died at Dumfries 31st March 1900 aged 73 years. Also the above William Irving who died at No 2 Seaforth Avenue, Annan 30th September 1906 aged 82 years.

Problem with the surname.

  • The christening states Sarah as the daughter of Mary Spital and William Johnson.
  • The 1861 census shows Mary Spital, unmarried.
  • The grave inscription shows Sarah Johnson as the wife of William Irving.
