Biography

Catherine was the eldest daughter of David Johnstone and Janet McMurdo, born 1 Feb 1826 on Prince Edward Island, and probably in Long River. She married James Johnston from Lot 25. "By the same, on the 29th ult., Mr. James Johnston, of Lot 25, to Catherine, eldest daughter of Mr. David Johnston, Long River, New London." [1] [2] Meacham's Atlas of 1880, Lot 25, shows a 275 acre property with a cloth mill under the name "Mrs. James Johnstone". In 1880, a newspaper notice announced that Catherine Johnstone and Daniel McLean had entered into a partnership under the name Johnstone and McLean, and intended to continue the old business of manufacturing cloth. [3] Catherine, a widow aged 56, was living with her children Mary 23, Isabell 21, James (farmer) 19, and Millicent 17 in 1881 in Lot 25. They had 2 farm labourers. [4] Next to Catherine were Daniel (26), woolen manufacturer and Jannet (26) with John J, almost 1 year old. In 1882, Catherine put the Mill Valley Woolen Mills up for sale. In 1891, she was living with her unmarried son James, who was a farmer and miller in Lot 25 and a domestic servant. [5] [6] Her daughter Jennie and son in law Daniel do not seem to be living near them. The family might be the one living in Moose Jaw. [7]

Catherine died 27 Jan 1898 in Lacombe, Alberta.

"Most deeply do we regret the painful duty of chronicling the death of one of Lacombe's most respected residents in the person of Mrs. Johnston who passed peacefully away at the home of her son on Sunday last. Mrs. Johnston's death was caused by a fall which happened some weeks ago. The funeral, which took place on Monday from the Methodist church to the village cemetery was largely attended not withstanding the unfavorable weather. The sympathies of the whole community are extended to the bereaved friends." [8]

She was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Lacombe, Alberta. [9]
