Biography

Robert was baptized in Annan, Scotland on June 7 1829, the son of William Johnston and Mary Little. [1] His family put born 6 May 1830 in Annan, Scotland on his gravestone. [2] The 1861 census lists Robert as living alone in Lot 20, Queens, Prince Edward Island. His neighbours on the census were Mary Johnston, Robert Johnston, Robert Johnston and William Johnston. (3 Roberts out of 4 listings) Thomas and Samuel Burrows lived nearby.

Robert (this one, I hope) held 89 acres by lease for 999 years of which 7 had expired for 89 shillings. The land was owned by Miss Cundall. He had leased 50 acres in 1849 for 200 years for £4 0 0, having paid in 1859 £3 2 1, with arrears due in Dec. 1859 £7 19 1. [3]

The 1881 census lists Richard Tanter or Painter age 60, Ellen Hogan age 38 and Katie age 5 living in Robert's household. Robert was unmarried, age 46. [4] The 1891 census lists Mrs Hogan age 51, dom. and Katie Hogan age 16, L[odger] residing in the same household. [5] The 1901 census lists Robert Johnston there who came from Scotland in 1843, birth date 4 Sept 1832. [6]

Robert died 7 Dec 1907 and was buried in Geddie Memorial, New London, Queens, Prince Edward Island. [7]

Robert died without a will. Alexander Campbell and John Johnston petitioned the courts to settle his estate on March 18 1908. The request was also signed by John A. Mann and James Mann, Burlington, son of Janet Mann, deceased, sister of the deceased; by William Campbell of Graham's Road, Archibald Campbell, Clifton, James A. Campbell and John J Campbell, Long River, son of Isabelle Campbell, deceased, sister; by Margaret Hogg, widow, Wilmot, sister; and John A. Burrows, son of Mary Burrows, deceased, sister of the deceased.

Robert's property consisted of 100 acres of land situated on the West Side of Long River, valued at $2000, as well as personal property valued at $1500. [8]
