" LASTS MESC Crushed By Machine In Bridgman Father Of 13 Killed In Plant Accident BRIDGMAN -- A 53-year-old die casting machine operator died this morning in an industrial accident at. the Products Engineering Manufacturing Corp. here. He was the father of 13 children. Clifford Joiner. Gast road, Route 1, Bridgman, was pronounced dead shortly after 7 a.m. by Dr. Joseph Rambo, Bridgman, deputy county medical examiner. His head was crushed by a 600- ton aluminum die casting machine. Oscar Zielke, president, said the accident was still under investigation. Zielke explained Joiner had just started to work on his morning shift after punching in. MAKING ADJUSTMENTS He had started his die casting machine and was apparently making some adjustments at the rear of it. A guard had been removed earlier by a set up man, according to Zielke. Somehow Joiner got his head in the way of a guide bar in the lower end of the machine. Dr. Rambo said an autopsy was to be performed at Memorial hospital today. Joiner was a veteran die cast machine operator. He had been employed at Benton Harbor Malleable, New Products Corp., both of Benton Harbor, Du-Wel Corp., Bangor, and at one time worked for Chrysler Corp. 20 YEARS' EXPERIENCE He had more» than 20 years' experience in the die castings field. Joiner joined Pemco in January of 1961 and then left the firm, for a brief time. · He went back to work in June of 1962. This is the first fatal accident at Pemco since the firm began operation in 1946, Zielke said. Joiner and his wife, Lena, lived in Bridgman for about eight months before coming here from Benton Harbor. He formerly resided at 2222 Holly drive, Benton Harbor. Mr. Joiner was born Dec. 13, 1909. in Cave in Rock. 111., son of the late Frank and Kittle Joiner. Survivors include six daughters, Linda Joiner, at home; Mrs. Russell (Wilma) Moore, Mrs. Joshus (Ramona) Beaman. and Mrs. Clifford (Mary) David, all of Benton Harbor; Mrs. Richard (Kittie) Fields, Eau Claire and Mrs. Roger (Nancy) Craft, of Florida; seven sons, Wesley and Curt, both at home, Clifford, Jr., James, Earl, and Terry Joiner, all of Benton Harbor, and Floyd Joiner, Florida. The body was to be removed from the Boyd funeral home, Bridgman, today and taken to the Florin funeral home, Benton Harbor, where funeral arrangements will be completed later." [1]
