Biography

Diana Louisa Jolley was born in 1816 and died in 1896. At the age of 36 she traveled with the John B. Walker Company wagon train, departing from Kanesville, Iowa in 1852. She traveled for 98 days arriving in Salt Lake City.[1]

She was married twice. First, to Calvin Jones, with whom she had at least one daughter. The second time to Dennis Dorrity (born on 7 March 1818 in Franklin Co., Illinois to Dennis and Sarah McClean Dorrity) in 1839, in Tennessee.

Diana and Dennis had seven children: Sarah Frances, Mary Ann Temperance, James Lemuel, Elizabeth Louisa, William Jasper Dennis Bryant, and Permeca Evaline.

Diana reported in her history that they joined in the early spring of 1848, with other members of the 2nd ten of the 2nd fifty of the 2nd 100 group in Amasa Lyman's company, with Willard Richards as captain over the whole company. They were among 52 people who settled in Palmyra in 1852. While living there Dennis became Marshall of the city of Palmyra.

After living there for a few years, they moved with 400 others to Spanish Fork in 1856. Here Dennis was appointed Mayor of the city on 4 May 1857. He was also an Alderman. The 50th quorum of the Seventy was partly organized in Spanish Fork on 19 May 1859 with Dennis as one of the presidents. He became a water master in 1858.

Dennis and his family were among the early settlers of Kanosh, Utah, in about 1868 or 1869. The book of the Birth of Kanosh lists Dennis Dorrity in the County Recorder's office for lot 8, Block 3. In addition to Three Creeks (a ranch in the south mountains), they had a farm on which they lived in the summer months doing farming and ranching. Dennis Dorrity also owned a farm at the south east corner of Kanosh including Block 1 of Kanosh, extending eastward to the Old Field Stream Now known as the Lower Town Ditch. Before the town was incorporated in 1903 The Kanosh cemetery was located on this farm. It is noted that it was call Dorrity field.

Diana outlived Dennis by two years. While the remains of most of the pioneers including Dennis and Diana are still in the old cemetery, their gravestones were all moved to the new cemetery. The old graveyard was apparently plowed and put to agricultural use.
