OBITUARY
EDWARD JOLLIE - A telegram received here from Patea announces the death of Mr Edward Jollie of Jollie, Fulton and Co. Napier. The deceased came to the colony in 1842 as one of the New Zealand Company's cadets. He was the first man to drive sheep overland from Nelson to Canterbury, where he settled and took part in local politics, being Provincial Secretary for some years. Subsequently he had a farm at Southbridge, but ten years ago, after sojourning in England, he bought a farm at Patea, where he has since resided. He leaves a widow and eight children.

"HONOUR TO WHOM HONOUR." TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir—l have been much surprised that in all the accounts I have seen of the early days there has been no mention of two who helped much in the burden and heat of those strenuous times. I refer to Mr J. W. J. Hamilton, who, when on the staff of Sir George Grey, did much in settling disputes amongst the Maoris, and to whom, with Mr Edward Jollie we owe in a large measure our wide streets and belts and our spacious reserves. We must always be grateful to Mr Jollie as surveyor, for his foresight and perseverance in persisting that the layout of the proposed City was not too ambitious for the future.—ours, etc., ONE WHO HAS BENEFITED. December 15th.

Date: 9 AUG 1894
