1896 Death Notice
Death of Mr. Sid. Jones.
AT about 3 o'clock on Monday morning there passed peacefully away one of Bowral's most respected business men. We allude to Mr S. A. Jones, draper, of Bong Bong street. Mr Jones came to Bowral about ten years ago, and was first employed by Mr. J. G. Morris, then by Mr. J. Alford, and then he launched out for himself, just before last Christmas he moved into his new premises and the worry and anxiety of so doing told on his weak strength considerably. About that time he consulted Dr. Johnson, who advised him to be very careful of himself. Six weeks ago he again consulted Dr Johnson, and immediately afterwards took to his bed.. He rapidly grew weaker. Then Dr. Fisher was called in, and Dr. Morgan a few days before his death. But medical skill and the best nursing were quite unable to cope with the disease; and five weeks from the time Mr. J.ones took to his bed his spirittook its flight. The severe pains ceased about five hours before his death, but he was conscious to the last. A quarter of an hour before passing away he shook hands with those who were with him during his last moments, wished them "good night," and then rested for aye.
Deceased, who was 33 years of age, leaves a widow, three young children, and three brothers - Mr. F. C. Jones, of Singleton; Mr. Thomas Jones, of Raymond Terrace; and Mr. John Jones, better known here as " Jack" Jones. When Jack left Bowral for Sydney five months ago and wished his now deceased brother good-bye he little realised the significance of the expression until he returned too late to again see his brother alive. Our sympathy is with the bereaved family. Of the deceased we may truly say with our contemporary, "He was one of those good-hearted, unassuming, upright men around whom friendship centres, and there are many in Bowral to-day who sincerely regret his early demise."
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and the cortege was a lengthy one,
a very large number of townspeople paying their last respect to one who in life was the friend of everyone. All the business places were closed, and the hearse was preceded by a number of business men walking in procession two and two abreast. Following the hearse was a large number of vehicles and horsemen. A short service was held at St Jude's Church, and then the remains of deceased were taken to and interred in the Church' of England portion of the general cemetery. The service was impressively conducted by the Rev. J. Poole Ollis, who was assisted by the Rev. J. Penman. Mr. J. Beavan conducted the funeral arrangements.
Many letters and telegrams of condolence were received by the bereaved family, while wreaths and floral tribute were received from the following - Mrs E DeMestre, Rev. and Mrs. G. D'Arcy-Irvine, Mr. J. W. Grovenor, Mrs. V. B. Riley, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. Murray, Mr. and Mrs. Perkins, Mrs. G. H.
