Biography

James Robert "Jim" Jones was born on May 24 1881 in Smith County, Mississippi, USA as the third child of William Calvin Jones and Martha Stephens. ^[1] He had eight siblings, namely: Margaret Martha, William Joseph, John Matthew, Marion Dauz "Daws", Alpha Lenora, Albert Jackson, Jesse Able, and one unknown.

He died on Nov 11 1938 in Magee, Simpson, Mississippi, USA (at home; Age at Death: 57). ^[2]

When he was 27, he married Laura Alzedia Carney, daughter of Harmon Carney and Margaret F. Satcher, on Mar 15 1909 in Ellisville, Jones, Mississippi, USA. ^[3]

James Robert "Jim " Jones was cause of death was mitral regurgitation of heart. He had a medical condition of Brights disease; a kidney disease. The hospital could do no more for him and sent him home where he died about a month later. ^[4]

Jim R. Jones

MAGEE, Nov. 17 – Funeral services for Jim R. Jones of Mendenhall, were held from the Goodwater Baptist church following his death after an illness of several days.

Mr. Jones was 58 years of age and a native Simpson Countian. He was a member of the Goodwater Baptist church.

Services were conducted by the Rev. R. E. Bounds of Weathersby, assisted by the Rev. H. H. Benton of Magee. Interment was in the Goodwater cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Calvin Jones of Magee; three sons, Hollis Jones of Mt. Olive, Virgil Jones of Mt. Olive and Robert Jones of Mendenhall; six daughters, Mrs. Homer Stephens [sic s/b Stevens] of Mendenhall, Mrs. V. A. Bynum of Magee, Mrs. Henry McKinley of Mt. Olive, Miss Annie Jones of Mendenhall, Miss Ella Jones of Mendenhall, Miss Edna Jones of Mendenhall; five brothers, William Jones of Magee, John Jones of Arkansas, Albert Jones of Louisiana, Daws Jones of Magee and Jesse Jones of Magee. ^[13]

Mississippi death certificate # 38-19124 validates his parents as Calvin Jones and Martha Ellen Stephens. Death certificate, lists birth as May 1, 1880 and death as Nov 11, 1938, age 58 years old. Draft registration lists birth as May 24, 1879. Name on draft was listed as James Robert Jones and he made his mark as signature. His occupation was listed as lumber grader. An observation, in the 1930 MS Simpson census both parents and all 9 children grouped together!

Jim Jones smoked and drank. He grew his own tobacco and made his own corn whiskey. My mother had to help make the whiskey. ^[4]

My mother's parents died when she was very young. At first the four younger children went to live with their older sister Vergie. They lived with her and her husband working the farm. After the farm was lost the four went to live with other sisters and brother. Mom went to live with her sister Pearlie. Her Twin sister Edna stayed with her sister Vergie. Annie went to her sister Myrtle. Robert went to his brother Hollis. Robert or Buck? would end up going from one sister/brother to the next. ^[4]
