Biography

At his death in 1780, Zachariah Jones had two adult children, Wingate Jones and Sally (Jones) Connaway. He also had five children who were minors: Zachariah, Ephraim, Isaac, Hannah, and Leah.

Will

bequests from the will of Zechariah Jones, 19 May 1780

to eldest son Wingate Jones, my lands whereon I now dwell, being part of two several tracts, one called ‘Pepper’s Chance’ the other ‘Good Hope’, containing 139 acres. Also a resurvey of a tract west of the other two on north side of Ditch Swamp
Zechariah is concerned that his eldest son take care of his younger siblings. An enslaved man, Caesar was bequeathed to Wingate “on condition he keeps his brothers Zechariah Jones, Ephraim Jones, and Isaac Jones to live with him and bring them up till they arrive of age.” In addition, Wingate "shall and will keep ... [enslaved woman] Phillis and her increase and child that she now has … till his youngest sister arrives to the age of eighteen (named Leah) she and her increase then to go as is hereafter directed."
also to Wingate Jones, various household and farming items.
to second son Zechariah Jones, 100 acres of Pallen (fallow?) land called Burks Glade in Dagsbury hundred. Also 60 acres “which I have a deed for from Robert Ingram.” Various household, livestock, to be his when he turns 21. The will also leaves an enslaved girl named Phoebe to Zechariah.
to third son, Ephraim Jones, the remainder of the Resurvey bequeathed to Wingate Jones. Livestock, farm implements and household items including pewter. An enslaved man named Jack, who is to live with son Wingate until Ephraim comes of age.
to fourth son, Isaac Jones, 50 acres in Dagsberry Hundred.. Also a bed and furniture and some livestock.
to daughter Sally Conaway, one shilling Sterling
rest of estate to two daughters Hannah Jones and Leah Jones.
Son Wingate Jones sole executor.

Witnessed by William Powell, William Newbold, and Simon Kollock. It was proved in 1780 – the day and month are left blank.

MD d. ca 1780 Dagsboro Hd, Sussex Co., DE m ca 1749 ____ Wingate, dau of Phillip Wingate and Sarah ____. Zachariah made his will on 19 May 1780 and his death occurred shortly after that date. He gave his eldest son, Wingate Jones, "My plantation whereon I now dwell "Pepers Choice" and "Good Hope" containing 139 acres which were deeded to me by my brother, Thomas Jones". He also gave Wingate the easternmost and southeast part of the resurvey. [1]
