Research Notes

Prior biography notes involving Susannah as having maiden name Jones have been moved here. A 1724 Isle of Wight deed confirms Susannah had maiden name Bird, not Jones as some have suggested. Research Notes were added to the profile for Rowland Jones re: plausible explanation of the “sister Bressie” named in Rowland Jone’s will.

Susannah Jones was christened December 10, 1643, Littleham By Bideford, Devon, England. [2]

Susannah was not mentioned in her father's will of 1665, believed by researchers to be excluded because she had become a Quaker.[3]

Susannah is mentioned in her brother Rowland's will: 'Sister Bressie, a ring'

The maiden name for Sussannah (Bird) Bressie Jordan was Bird, not Jones. This is confirmed by a 1724 deed in Isle of Wight referring to the 1656 will of her father Robert Bird which is of record and names a daughter Susannah. Susannah DID have a nephew William Jones of York County, confirmed by a 1701 deed, which presumably causes the confusion here. I have not been able to determine the exact family connection between Susannah and nephew William Jones. Hopefully others have relevant info to share. The last deed below is of a William Jones (perhaps the same that was nephew to Susannah) that recites that land was willed by Edward Jones, dec’d.

Also perhaps the following witnesses names are helpful. Note that no Jones were witnesses at the Quaker marriage of Susannah (Bird) Bressie to Matthew Jordan.

Another follow up: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bird-1559 has details of Robert Bird’s will which names daughter Susannah. Mr. William Bressey is listed as an overseer of the will.

I may try to look at some records in York before updating anything more but seems you already made some updates - thank you! Certainly Susannah was a Bird, but more than that it would seem the most probable conclusion to be that Susannah (Bird) Bressie Jordan’s sister Elizabeth (named in her father, Robert Bird’s will, and otherwise unaccounted for to my knowledge) was the Elizabeth LNU, first wife of Rowland Jones d. 1688. This would account for Rowland Jones naming a sister (sister-in-law?) Bressie in his will. I read that, Rowland Jones, “According to Bruton Register he had buried his first wife, Elizabeth, Oct. 29 1678.” And from what I read, Rowland did name a son William in his will. If the “sister Bressie” named in the Rowland will was in fact, Susannah (Bird) Bressie Jordan, the above scenario seems to be the only one that fits. Search of York records to shed more light on the nephew William Jones of York as of 1701 might be helpful in making a conclusion.

I added research notes for the above for Rowland Jones.

I just found something that sheds light on this mystery! According to Blanche Adams Chapman in her book Marriages of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1628-1800, there were two marriages between a Matthew Jordan and a Susannah in Isle of Wight:

1) "Jordan, Mathew and Mrs. Susannah Bressie, relict of William Bressie. 1713. D. B. 1, p. 347."

2) ""JORDAN, MATHEW and SUSANNAH BIRD, daughter of Robert Bird. 1724. G. B., p. 648"

I'm not sure if the dates reference the actual marriage dates, or if they are simply the earliest records that show the couples together. I

I guess the dates listed by Chapman are not marriage dates. They are simply references to documents that mentioned Matthew and Susannah as being married. So it does not necessarily imply that there was more than one Susannah, as I thought at first.

Jones-96600 and Jones-30677 appear to represent the same person because: they share similar vital statistics, the same parents, the same siblings and the same spouse, William Bressie (Bracey).
