Story written by Berry Vestor Jones, THE MARSHALL COURIER (NO DATE)
Was reared in a family of twelve children, four girls and eight boys.
I lived on a farm did farm work and made my own living until I was twenty one years old, then my father set me free to do as I pleased.
When small I would often help my mother and sisters spin, weave and make clothes for the family. I never wore any clothes except home made clothes until I was twenty one years old.
I left my old home May 8, 1858, went to Paducah then from there to New Orleans on a boat, was 12 days and nights in making the trip, stayed one day at New Orleans, then sailed back up the Mississippi river for several miles, then up the Red river to Shreveport, Louisiana -------night, then sailed on up the Red river to Rollen, Texas; stayed there an hour or two then my companion and I started on foot to Clarksville, Texas, a distance of about one hundred miles. We were three days making the trip.
I lived there with my brother at Clarksville for three years and six months and was engaged principally in the milling business until the civil war broke out. I enlisted for the war September 13, 1861, and then one month later left Clarksville. I served in the war for three years. During that time I traveled through eight states and one territory. During the war I was in only two great battles, first one was at Fort Dolenson Feb 5, 1862. There I was taken prisoner and was in prison for seven months; then I was exchanged to Jackson, Mississippi; stayed there two weeks and was then sent to Houston, Texas, stayed there four months then marched to the line between Texas and Louisiana and had a great battle known as the twenty miles battle; then after the battle stayed there about 2 weeks then news came that peace was declared and I was discharged and sent back to Clarksville; stayed there about ---then started home on horse back to my old home.
Reached home in February 1864 after an absence of six years and six months.
Lived with my father about two years then was married to Mrs. Martha E. Jones, August 6, 1866; to this union was born one child Leona Jones. My wife lived a short while only 5 years, eight months, and 23 days. Then God who doeth all things well saw fit to call her home. She died June 29, 1872
I then lived alone until the following February, then I was married to Miss Lucinda Thweatt Feb 6, 1873. To this union was born four children, Hardin, Mary, Guss and Lucy Jones all of whom still survive. But God in his infinite wisdom has seen fit to call my wife to a better home. She departed this life, June 18, 1921 at the age of 70 years 6 months and 17 days.
My age now is 84 years and 8 months. I am able to work some now but have lost the sight of my left eye and am very feeble, but God being my helper I intend to try to do my duty until the summon’s is sent for me.
