Joseph was born about 1749/50, probably in Perquimans, North Carolina. His parents may have been Joshua and Jane Jones, or the son of Evan Jones.

Jos Jones and Mary Overman appeared and declared their intentions of marriage before this meeting it being the first time friends appoint Zachariah and Thos Nixon to make inquiry into his clearness and make report to the next monthly meeting."

"At a Monthly Meeting held in Pasquotank the 17th day of 2nd month 1768 ... Also Jos. Jones and Mary Overman appeared and desired an answer to their proposals last monthly meeting they appearing clear are left to their liberty to marry and friends appoint Phineas Nixon and Nicholson to attend the wedding and make report to next monthly meeting."
