Biography

Sarah (Jones) Chamberlain immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Sarah Jones was born in Caversham, Oxfordshire, England on January 28, 1630/1; the daughter of Thomas Jones and his wife Anna (Linney) Jones.[1]

At about age 7 years, Sarah migrated with her parents and three siblings on the ship Confidence out of Southampton on April 24, 1638,[2]her siblings being John, Abraham, and probably Hannah. Also on board the Confidence were the Jones' servants, William Baunsh(e) and Jude Donley (or Denley); as well the family of John Benson of Caversham who were probably closely related to Helen (Benson) Linney, Sarah's grandmother.[1]

In New England the family first settled at Hingham where her father continued in his trade as a tailor. He had been born at Caversham, England about 1602[3]probably the son of Roger Jones; baptized there on January 23, 1602/3. Sarah's mother, according to English parish records, was Ann Linney, baptized in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire; the daughter of Floris/Florence Linney and his wife Helen (Benson) Linney. While in Hingham, two more siblings of Abraham came into the world, Thomas Jones and Mary Jones.[1]

About 1651 at Hingham, Sarah married Henry Chamberlain, the son of Henry and Jane Chamberlain of Hingham and Hull. Her mother had died the previous year and a few years later, in 1657, her father remarried to Abigail (unknown surname) Ellithorpe in Boston on June 25, 1657. At that time, the family moved to Hull, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1][3]

Henry, Sarah's husband, had inherited blacksmith tools from his father; so it seems he was a blacksmith while living at Hingham. When, however, Sarah and Henry moved to Hull, and he became a proprietor of Hull, "he was obligated to enter the fishing trade, and his inventory mentions one-sixth of a scine and a small sea-bed.[4]

Sarah's husband, Henry Chamberlain died at Hull on December 2, 1678, about 60 years old. He left Sarah all the lands, houses, cattle and estate during her widowhood, until their children became of age.[4]

Sarah's father, Thomas Jones died in Manchester before March 9, 1680/1.[3]

Sarah (Jones) Chamberlain died in Boston on December 16, 1710[3]at the age of 75 years.[4]

From NEHGR 142:354 on William Chamberlain: "He is traditionally believed to have been married twice, the name of neither wife being known. His first wife, married undoubtedly at Hull about died about 1660 and William married again the following year. His first wife may have been related to Robert Coombs or his first wife Mary. Robert Coombs by 1657 owned that part of William's three acre homelot that bordered on Town Street. Morevover, following his death, William's ownership of Sheep Island was transferred to Robert Coombs."

profiles for her parents are Ann Unk-504514 & Thomas Jones-37241. I'm thinking Jones-37242 and this profile should be merged. Susan (PM) do you agree? If so, please update this profile. Thanks.

Per RJ's note below any objections to disconnecting Sarah from these the location suggests she is not part of this family.

I have no objection, just let me know if I need to do anything to facilitate the process.

Thanks. After I posted I noticed there was another merge proposed. Since this is a duplicate without any other attachments, it makes sense to merge with the same last name of birth and not disconnect the parents afterall. I updated the birth/death info so its consistent with the daughter of the current parents.

This profile seems to represent an unlikely theory about the origins of a Sarah (____) Bullard whose husband died at Medfield in 1722.

https://www.geni.com/people/Sarah-Bullard/6000000024850558840 (an alternative unlikely theory, see Jones-21705)

Her parents probably weren't Thomas and Anne Jones of the Confidence.
