Mary married Rufus Merrick. Rufus was recorded as 17 in the 1861 Census with his parents, Nathan & Margaret Merrick, on Con. 4, Lot 6, Euphrasia Twp., Grey Co. Rufus’ brother Stephen married Mary’s sister Agnes.
Euphrasia, Glimpses Past & Present by M Alderdice et al recorded that Rufus Merrick & Thomas Jones settled on the 8th Concession between 1861 & 1871.
About 1869, Jennetta was born. A Mirick child was born Nov. 10, 1869, but to different parents.
The 1871 Census, Euphrasia Twp., recorded Rufus, 25, born Ontario, German, farmer, employee, Mary, 23, wife, & Jennetta, 2, all on Con. 8, Lot 4E. Mary’s brother Thomas H. Jones was recorded on the same lot as a farmer too.
About 1871, Walter James was born.
On Aug. 14, 1873 (B), Ella May was born in Artemesia Twp. She was recorded as Ela Meay in the 1881 Census. Rufus was recorded as a farmer on Con. 14, Lot 20, Artemesia Twp. This farm had been Mary’s parents.
The 1881 Census, Artemesia Twp., recorded Mary as Mary Jones, the married head of the household, 37, married, English, Agnes, her mother, a widow, Jenny, 11, Walter James, 10, & Ela Meay, 7, all Cdn. Methodist. Where was Rufus & why was Mary using her maiden name?
The family was not found in the 1901 Census.
