Biography

Enoch Madison Jones was born 22 Apr 1814 in Christian Co, KY. His family is on the 1810 census there and moved to Illinois in 1815 after he was born.

In 1815 the family moved to Illinois and his sister Mary E married Capt Samuel Brimberry in Edwards Co, now Crawford Co, IL in June 1816. His family is #322 on the 1818 Census for Crawford Co, IL. The whole family including siblings and families who had married moved together. They lived there until 1821 when they moved to Paris, Edgar Co, IL.

In July 1821 the families moved to Paris Township, Edgar Co, IL. Thomas Jones was known to be the first settler here.

Enoch Madison Jones married Margaret "Peggy" Ann Thompson on 17 Oct 1832 in Paris.

In 1835 Enoch, Margaret, and their two children, along with Elizabeth Jones, Enoch's mother emigrated to Texas with Robertson's Colony and were registered there on 16 Feb 1836. Enoch, himself, was involved in frontier defense with the Republic of Texas where he rose to the level of Captain, serving under commands of Erath, Moorehead, Boales & Sterling Robertson. Because of this service and his arrival in Texas in 1835, he received several patents of land.

Enoch and his family are listed on the 1850 and 1860 census in Sherman, Grayson Co, TX where he became a successful businessman, served in city offices and owned the Jones Livery in 1858 when the first Butterfield Stage Line came through Sherman. He made many land transactions and was a mover and shaker in a cattle partnership with James P Dumas.

On 4 Jan 1862 Enoch Enlisted as Capt in Co K, 22nd TX Cavalry for a 12 mo period but then was dropped. Not sure whether he was ill or something else happened. His description at age 47 is: 6' 2", black hair & eyes, dark complexion.

On 13 Sep 1866 while taking hay to a post close to Jack Co, TX, Enoch and his son Robert Jones were attached and killed by a band of Comanches led by Persummy who later attached the Babb family.
